With more than 2,500 museums and more than 400 galleries in the country, Kolkatas art scene has been shaped by a wide range of influences.
But while many of these influences have been imported from abroad, the local artist community has been uniquely attuned to the local culture.
“There’s a certain art that has survived, and it’s very important to us,” said Karan Pal, a contemporary artist who has lived in Kollam since he was a child.
“We are a very diverse community.
So, we have to find something unique that is unique in Kutch.”
He explained that his most prominent work, a large painting, is one of the more difficult to find.
“I like the way that it’s a lot bigger than the rest,” he said.
“And it’s not just an art, but it’s also a message.”
